First off, what an experience, driving into New York! We have a Garmin device that knows our height, and it sent us on a convoluted route into Brooklyn where our RV park up site was. In the end this was interesting, we were sightseeing from Shaun through some diverse neighbourhoods! We decided to stay on an official site, so we would feel safe. This proved to be very expensive so we felt we had to pack in as much as possible while we were there! So long days out and about and lots of steps done!

Shaun parked up in Brooklyn

As our park up was in Brooklyn, we caught the ferry across to Manhattan on quite a few occasions, and travelled under and over the Brooklyn Bridge. We loved seeing the iconic skyline of New York; of course it reminded us of so many movies we have seen. Highlights were :-

  • walking the Highline walk, an old rail track spur, now a linear walk, with so much art and natural planting along the way.
  • the very moving 9/11 memorial park and museum.
  • fantastic views of the city from the Empire State Building, The Edge and the Rockefeller Tower.
  • a great cycling tour around Central Park.
  • Staten Island and saw the Statue of Liberty up close and personal, as well as seeing Ellis Island, where so many people started their immigrant life in the USA. This involved incredibly long queues and security checks, this was frustrating!
  • Visiting a tenement museum and seeing how immigrants lived through generations.
  • Going to a speakeasy bar!

We really enjoyed seeing New York, we didn’t get to see everything that we wanted to, but our feet told us we had done a lot!! We were glad to be leaving a very big city after 5 days!
